Goulas Tower in Emporio

Emporio or otherwise "Niborios" is the largest village of Santorini with 1773 inhabitants (2001). It is located on the south side of the island, 12 kilometers from Fira, at the foot of Mount Prophet Elias.

In the center of Emporio there is a traditional settlement, Kasteli. Close to and northeast of Kasteli is this Goulas or Tower.

Goulas dates from the 15th or 16th century. In other words, it had to be built when the neighboring Kasteli had already begun to form.

Goulas was probably used for storing agricultural products and protecting cultivators. It belonged to the Darzenda family. When the era of piracy passed, after the 17th century, it became a part of the monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos of Patmos and there were monks who belonged to it.
