Monastery of Capuchin
The Capuchin Church can be seen from the coastal town of Ermoupolis at the top of the hill. There are a vast number of steps to climb through the narrow streets of Ano Syros, but it is definitely worth the climb. This wonderful church dating from the 1600's was founded by King Louis II of France and is dedicated to St John the Baptist. Currently, there are no monks in the monastery, except the abbot. Throughout its long history, has played an important role in the religious and social life of Ano Syros since the village's dignitaries used the monastery's courtyard for their assemblies. The monastery was also the Catholic Cathedral of the island for the period 1639 -1652.
The church has undergone recent renovation and has a modern exterior with glass doors to a large balcony. It has also retained the beautiful old interior. At the back of the altar is a large religious painting of John the Baptist baptising Jesus Christ. The high arched ceiling is decorated and adorned with religious images. In the basement of this church, there are crypts that were used as shelters during pirate raids. It is said that the Ottoman leader of the island, used to hide in the Capuchin monastery every time a pirate ship appeared on the horizon. Since 1896, the crypts host bones and tombstones belonging to old Catholic families. The monastery also hosts a library, featuring 6,000 old books and manuscripts.
