Gria
Grias Lighthouse, also known as Achla Lighthouse, stands as a testament to Andros Island's rich maritime heritage. Built in 1914 by the French Lighthouse Company, this historic beacon has guided sailors through the Aegean Sea for over a century.
Historical Significance
Originally powered by oil, Grias Lighthouse emitted a distinctive red flash every two minutes, with a range of 14 nautical miles. During World War II, the lighthouse was decommissioned but resumed operations in 1945. In 1984, it was electrified, enhancing its range to 25 nautical miles. Today, its original mechanism is preserved at the Kairis Library in Chora, Andros’ charming capital.
Architectural Features
The lighthouse features an 11.5-meter-tall circular tower and an adjacent keeper's house, designed in a traditional Γ-shaped layout. The house, once home to the lighthouse keeper, includes three bedrooms, kitchen, toilet, and storerooms. Although uninhabited today due to automation, this stone-built structure, it remains a significant historical structure.
Visiting Grias Lighthouse
Reaching Grias Lighthouse is an adventure in itself. The route starts from the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, and the final 3 kilometers are on a dirt road, so a suitable vehicle such as an ATV or a 4WD is recommended. The journey offers breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea and the rugged landscapes of Andros.
