Medieval Clock Tower (Roloi)

The Clock Tower was built in 1857 by Fethi Pasha next to the Suleyman temple within the Medieval City of Rhodes. It is located at the point where Sokratous street intersects with Orfeos street and is perfectly operational. In previous times, the clock informed Greeks of the Turkish time. This was important because the Turks had strict rules for who could enter the leave Rhodes. The old mechanism of the clock is considered to be one of the technological achievements of the 19th century. A steep wooden staircase leads to a small room at the top of the tower with superb 360-degrees views across the Old Town and the new city in distance. If you do not have mobility issues, the climb is good value for money. Visitor have to pay a small fee to enter the tower, and this includes a free drink in the open-air café in the terrace. Best time to visit the Clock Tower is on an evening when the monument is lit up.
