Palace in Limenaria
Perched on the hillside this spooky reminder of the past dominates the little village of Limenaria. This amazing building has a lot of history attached to it. It was built in 1903 by Italian architect Peitro Arigoni to house the head office of Speidel, the German company which by then was exploiting the Thassos mines. The building last used in the 60s and was abandoned after the mines closed. Palataki (small palace) is a two-storied building with two little towers on its narrow facets. As a vivid example of eclectic architecture, it is characterized by a strict geometry and is influenced from central European adherents. Once, it played a pivotal role in the town’s economic life, today it is just a symbol of Limenaria’s rich past offering visitors a glimpse of local history and breathtaking views of the town and beyond.
It is an easy climb up the steps to reach this abandoned house or you can go a slightly easier route by going by the road and across the bridge. On walking round the building, you get an amazing view of the town below. Palataki is one of the highlights of the village and it is worth a visit if you are in the area, but do not except much as it has fallen into such a state of disrepair. There are information signs that tell you the history of the building and the industry plus some interesting sculptures. Just up from here is a folk museum, very small but very interesting. if you walk through the gardens look out for Metallia beach next to the mine workings. Palataki has been listed as a monument since 1982 but due to the lack of funding, it has not been forthcoming to renovate or prevent this building from becoming an empty vandal building.
