Kambos Chios

Just a few kilometres south of Chios Town, Kambos is one of the island's most elegant and distinctive districts. Designated as a protected historic settlement, it is renowned for its fragrant citrus orchards, grand Genoese mansions, and beautiful walled estates, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage.

Kambos flourished during the Genoese period in the 14th century, when wealthy merchants built impressive residences surrounded by fertile orchards. Although many of the original mansions were destroyed during the Massacre of Chios (1822) and the devastating 1881 earthquake, the area has preserved its distinctive character. High walls built from the island's famous Thymiana stone, traditional wells and centuries-old citrus groves remain defining features of this remarkable landscape, making Kambos one of the finest examples of Chios' citrus orchard heritage.

Today, many of the beautifully restored mansions have been transformed into charming boutique hotels, guesthouses, cafés and museums, while the peaceful lanes shaded by orange, lemon and mandarin trees are perfect for a leisurely walk or a scenic bike ride. Kambos is also one of the best places on the island to sample locally produced citrus delicacies and experience a quieter side of Chios.

Located just 6.5 km from Chios Town, Kambos is easily reached by car or bicycle and is a highlight of many scenic cycling routes in Chios. A visit can easily be combined with a swim at nearby Karfas Beach, only a 10-minute drive away.

Whether you're interested in history, architecture, local gastronomy or photography, Kambos is one of the top attractions in Chios and an essential stop in any Kambos Chios travel guide. Its timeless atmosphere, elegant estates and lush gardens make it one of the island's most memorable places to explore.
