Homers Rock and Sanctuary of Cybele
The rock of Daskalopetra, on the northernmost beach of Vrontados, is one of the most famous monuments of Chios. It was closely linked to the tradition of Homer and was considered the School of the great poet. The testimonies of many ancient writers advocate in this respect. The rock of Daskalopetra was of great interest and always visited by the travelers of the island.
Others considered him a school of Homer, and Richard Chandler (1764) named the rock of Cybel's sanctuary. Kyveli, the Great Mother, was worshiped in ancient Chios and there was probably a temple in the area of Vrontados, where many reliefs and statues and a votive inscription were found.
In the archaic years, the goddess is posed sitting in a temple, so the temple dates back to the end of the 6th century BC. century. Today it is terribly destroyed, the top is completely missing and its surface is worn.
