Apolichnos Castle

Castles of Apolichnos are located in South Chios, 20 km from the city. It lies on a hill, northwest of the village of Armolia, controlling the whole area to the sea.
It was built in 1440 by Genoese Nicolas Banca Justiniani. It is built in a trapezoidal shape, surrounded by double walls and has 62 rooms inside. It features a large tower and small defensive towers at the top corners. In front of the big Tower there is a reservoir (cistern), in which the rainwater accumulated in a canal system from the roofs of the rooms and the tower to provide drinking water.

The Castle is in contact with the coastal villas of the area from Komi to the Lithi Sea, forming part of the island's defense system. In the event of a hostile raid, the message was transmitted from villa to villa and then to Inland Castles, with smoke signals a day and fires at night to organize the defense.
Access to this requires a slight climb from a path that crosses an olive grove initially, then a wooded area, until it reaches the bare peak of the mountain where the Castle stands.
