Kammenos Tower
A medieval tower-house in the city of Chios, south of the port, in a neighborhood with the same name “Kammenos Pyrgos” (meaning: Burned Tower).
Although far from being in excellent condition, it is one of the best preserved medieval buildings in Chios island.
The locals claim that this was a Byzantine tower. However the construction is similar to other Genoan mansions in the island, therefore, it must have been built during the Genoan period, most likely, in the 14th or the 15th century.
Apparently it remained in use for a long time, perhaps until the 20th century.
Despite its name, the tower does not look burned. We believe that in the past another tower in the area was standing half-burned and this was the origin of the name of that part of the city. When the city developed, the original burned tower disappeared and the only medieval building that remained was the tower we present in this page and which nowadays is named “Kammenos Pyrgos ”(Burned Tower). Thus, this tower took its name from the area and not the other way around.
