Megali Ammos beach

Megali Ammos beach

This is a very long sandy beach near the village of Kanala, on the east side of Kythnos island. Enclosed within a natural bay, the beach is well-protected from the north winds, making swimming safe and enjoyable. The cove has rocks on both sides and is partially covered by trees which provide some natural shade. Entrance to the water is smooth and swimming in the cove is great. There is a beach bar with sun beds to hire but also plenty of free space to lay down your own towel. Megali Ammos beach has crystalline emerald waters and is preferred mainly by families. It is one of the busiest beaches on Kythnos and gets very crowded in high season. To the east of the beach, is the peninsula of Kanala with the Church of Panagia and the quaint little chapel of Agia Kalliopi. Within walking distance, there are two more lovely beaches. To the left is the pristine beach of Antonides and between Megali Ammos beach and the Kanala peninsula, is a small beach called Ammoudaki. Near the beach is the popular tourist resort of Kanala with many shops, tavernas, hotels and rooms to rent.
