Tis Grias to Pidima beach
It is one of the most scenic and certainly one of the most characteristic beaches of Andros, but also one of the most famous of Greece. Located on the southeast coast of the island near Korthi, it is a clean sandy beach with crystal clear water and beautiful view. Although it is a bit difficult to find it, it is worth visiting it but if you have difficulty with walking, this is not the place for you.
There is a famous 21-meter-tall rock dominating the beach, perfect for great pictures and occasional jump off. Perhaps, it was this rock that gave birth to legends told by the locals and gave the name to the beach. One version tells of an old woman who jumped off the cliff because she couldn't bear the loneliness after becoming a widow for the third time. The second legend refers to Turks who were chasing an old woman and she desperately climbed the cliff to commit suicide to avoid falling into their hands. But the most popular of all, says that the old woman and her pregnant daughter asked for refuge in the Castle of Faneromeni or the “tis Grias to Kastro” “the Old Lady’s Castle”, inaccessible to the Turks due to its high rocky walls. During the night, the old woman opened the gate and the Turks entered and slaughtered the inhabitants. Then the old woman felt ashamed and committed suicide by jumping into the sea. For that reason, the beach is “Tis Grias to Pidima” which roughly means "The Old Lady's Jump".
The beach is located north of Ormos Korthi, about 30 kilometers drive from Batsi and 38 from Gavrio. The parking is accessible via a dirt road which is very good. At the parking area there is a sign that shows the way to the narrow path that leads down to the beach. The path is narrow and steep with railing where it makes sense. Hiking lovers can choose the path from Gialos through Agia Ekaterini, cause the natural environment that separates the two bays is extremely beautiful.
