Ateni beach
Andros Island has been blessed with many fine sandy beaches like Vitali, Zorkos and Ateni. Ateni beach is located in the northeast of the island, about 12 km from Batsi and though it is one beach it looks like it is two beautiful sandy coves touched by turquoise waters. To the left is Mikro (Little) Ateni, a small cove that feels like a pond, with inviting water. The water stays quite shallow for a way so it is great for children or anyone not very confident in water. Surrounded by sand dunes, Mikro Ateni is not organized with sun beds and umbrellas but offers peace and is well-protected from the winds most of the time. To the right is Megalo (Large) Ateni, a larger cove with golden sand and blue water but much deeper than Mikro Ateni. In Megalo Ateni, there is a beach bar and sun beds for rent. This cove is exposure to winds and is perfect for windsurfing and other water sports.
Although Ateni beach is quite popular it rarely gets overcrowded. The beach is about 18 km from Gavrio and getting there is relatively easy. Take the road from Gavrio to Chora and head towards the village of Katakoilos. Once there, turn left and head towards the village of Ateni and the beach with the same name. The road is paved but the last three kilometers are a dirt road, regardless of where you start from. However, it is easy to drive no matter the type of vehicle you drive. Ateni beach is undoubtedly one of the best beaches on Andros. Add it on your bucket list and enjoy the stunning scenery and the crystalline waters once there.
