Achla beach

Achla beach

Achla beach is located on the northeastern part of the island of Andros, north of Chora and under the village of Vourkotis. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, with fine white pebbles, enchanting clear blue waters, plane trees that reach the beach and the river Achlas that rushes to the shore right next to the beach. Achla is is in a beautiful bay surrounded by high cliffs and is a rather big beach.  Although Andros is well known for its strong winds, Achla is hidden from the piercing winds by the high rocks that hug it. So the water is calm most of the time. The landscape is really magical with  rocks forming caves and small rocky islets. It is not an organized beach and there are no amenities.

At the edge of the beach is the chapel of Saint Nicholas and the wetland of Achla, which hosts rare species of Greek fauna and flora. Rare birds, eels, water turtles and freshwater crabs live there. At the other end is the imposing lighthouse of Gria.

The beach is not easily accessible, since there is only a bad gravel road from Vourkoti village. You can get there much more easily by taking a boat from Chora. There are daily excursion from Chora to the beaches of the island including Achla. For those who like hiking, there is an interesting hiking route in the Achla valley, starting from Vourkoti village, passing through the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos and ending at the beach. The route is about 9.4 km with moderate grade of difficulty.
