Therma beach

The Therma beach is located in an idyllic landscape surrounded by high cliffs on the southeast coast of Kos, about 13 kilometers south of the city. Therma is a beach that also offers a unique natural spa experience. The hot springs are located on the shoreline in a circular basin that has been formed with some stones. Every now and then, cold water from the sea flows into it and mixes with the hot water that gushes from the subsoil. The water’s temperature ranges between 40º C - 45º C and is rich in many minerals including sulfur, calcium, potassium, and magnesium. These minerals provide therapeutic relief to those with ailments such as arthritis or rheumatism and any gynecological related issues. In addition to the healing properties, the thermal waters offer wellness and relaxation and are suitable for all ages and for all seasons. The pool varies in size so different spots will have different temperatures. If you get too hot you can move to the edge where the sea waves splash in cool seawater or just go for a swim in the ocean. Swimming in the hot spring water and then in the open sea is very refreshing and provides a one-of-a-kind natural spa experience. The water travels under the sea from the neighboring volcanic island of Nisyros. In the background there are some old buildings that now are completely abandoned. The hot springs were discovered in 1934 by the Italian archaeologist Luciano Laurenzi.

The coast is covered with smooth black pebbles. The waters are crystal and deepen sharply. The coast is surrounded by steep slopes and cliffs where many goats live which occasionally visit the beach and steal food from visitors. There is no natural shade except only in a few spots under the rocks.

Only a small part of the beach is organized with parasols, sun loungers and a beach bar. The beach attracts many people not only during the summer but also in winter who come to enjoy this unique natural spa.  The beach can be easily reached by bus, which runs daily to the area, by car, taxi, motorbike and bicycle.  It is a steep walk down to the beach but the scenery is beautiful as is the rest of the coast. If you drive there, it is suggested to park in the big open-air parking on the top next to the main road and walk down to the beach. So, if you look for a unique beach experience the Therma beach is the one.

TIPS

  • Choose a dark swimsuit because the water contains sulfur and is likely to yellow the light fabrics
  • Note that the sulphur will immediately lightly tarnish silver jewelry, so take any off before getting in.
