Petra beach
Petra beach is pebbly with a few deckchairs on it and a beach bar with all the basics. What makes the place special is the Kallikatsou Rock, Petra (=stone in Greek) which stands out into the water at the end of it. You can scramble up to the top of it, and explore some of the manmade markings on it from when monks used to stay on it. The Rock was a hermitage until the 14th century and there are carved steps and a water tank that still survive. The view from the top of the rock towards Chora and the Monastery is worth mentioning. The water is emerald and very clear to swim in. At the back of the beach a small lake is formed where several migratory birds such as swans, herons and wild ducks find refuge during the winter. It is a very interesting beach because of the rock and a place worth visiting even if you don’t plan to stay and swim. Access is very easy and there are some tavernas serving traditional dishes nearby.
