Giola beach

Giola, also known as the "Tear of Aphrodite," is one of the most stunning natural wonders of Thassos. This breathtaking natural seawater pool is carved into the rocky coastline of Astris, on the southern coast of the island. Over millions of years, the waves have sculpted a circular rock formation, creating a crystal-clear, turquoise pool just a few centimeters from the Aegean Sea. With every wave, fresh seawater replenishes the pool, making it a constantly renewing oasis.

Unlike the open sea, Giola’s waters are warmer, and the pool reaches a depth of approximately three meters. The rocky edges gradually slope down to where the pool almost touches the sea, creating a mesmerizing contrast between the deep blue of the Aegean and the vibrant emerald waters of Giola.

A Scenic Location with Breathtaking Views

Located in Astris, on Thassos’ southern coast, Giola offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Aegean Sea, stretching as far as Mount Athos and the Monastery of Archangel Michael. Whether you're visiting at sunrise or sunset, this natural marvel is one of the most photographed locations on Thassos and a true bucket-list spot for travelers.

Even The Huffington Post Travel described Giola as “epically beautiful and crazy cool to swim in”, while several travel magazines have hailed it as “one of the best natural swimming pools in the world”.

The Legend of Giola: A Pool Fit for a Goddess

According to Greek mythology, Giola was created by Zeus as a private swimming pool for Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty. Another legend claims that Zeus used Giola as his "eye", watching over his beloved mistress. Whether myth or reality, this unique geological formation continues to enchant visitors from around the world.

How to Get to Giola, Thassos

A new asphalt road leads to Giola’s parking area, from where you’ll need to walk a few hundred meters to reach the pool. The path is rocky and uneven, so comfortable shoes are recommended. For a unique perspective, you can also see Giola from the sea! Several boat trips from Potos and Limenaria include a stop at Giola, allowing visitors to admire its beauty from the water and enjoy a refreshing swim.

Best Time to Visit Giola & Important Tips

As one of Thassos' top attractions, Giola gets crowded during peak season (July & August). To avoid the crowds, visit in May, June, or October, or arrive early in the morning for a more peaceful experience.

  • Jumping from the cliffs into the pool is a popular tradition, but it can be dangerous! Exercise caution if you choose to jump.
  • There are no steps to climb out of the pool, making it challenging for some swimmers to exit—especially children.
  • There are no sunbeds, umbrellas, or sandy areas—Giola is completely surrounded by rocks and small cliffs, so bring essentials like water, sunscreen, and sturdy footwear.
