Megalo Seitani beach

Megalo Seitani beach

Megalo Seitani is a beautiful secluded beach and a lovely place to visit whilst in Samos. It is located on the northwest coast of the island, near Potami beach. The beach itself has coarse sand and clear turquoise water. It is exposed to the northern winds, and on a windy day the sea may be a bit rough. It is not equipped with parasols but you can get some shade under the cliffs and trees. Megalo Seitani is an unspoiled beach in a Natura 2000 protected area because of the Monachus Monachus seals (or “Mediterranean Monk”), living there.

This hidden beach is only accessible by boat or by foot. To get there on foot is rather a long walk over quite rough terrain so be sure to wear sturdy trainers or walking shoes and allow about 2 and a half hours for the round trip. However, the hike is spectacular and worth it for the views and sight of the empty beach at the end where a swim in the sea is a must. The trail is well-signed and easy to follow. The hike starts from Potami and first leads to Mikro Seitani beach which is about 45 minutes walking. Follow the steep concrete road at the end of the Potami beach and soon you will get to the starting point of the trail to Seitani beach.  The trail is mainly in the shade and sometimes quite steep. Mikro Seitani is a small bay, equally beautiful and much more sheltered than Megalo Seitani. Here you can take a quick dip and rest for a while before heading to Megalo Seitani beach. Follow the trail across the small beach and walk up the wooden staircase along the steep rocks. We would advise you to leave early in the morning and definitely take supplies with you because there is nothing on the way and on the beach.

Do not miss to visit the little quaint chapel of Agios Nikolaos (St. Nicholas) at the end of the beach which seems to be hanging from the cliffs. The beach is ideal for camping, but please respect the nature and take all your garbage with you.
