Polis beach
Polis beach is a gem of a place with lovely clear waters and a beautiful setting. Being one of the few westerly beaches on Ithaca provides the early evening sunbathers and swimmers with some beautiful sunsets over the adjacent island of Kefalonia. The beautiful beach is in a little cove with some small fishing boats moored up along with some yachts that pull in to anchor overnight. You can walk around the little harbor where the fishing boats are, to get a feel for the real Greece. The beach here has sunbeds and is pebbly, so do bring your sea shoes. It is not crowded at all and swimming in the turquoise water is just wonderful. On the seabed are the ruins of an ancient sunken city and on the north side of the harbor is the Homeric Cave of Loizos where some important findings of the 2nd century BC were found. The findings are now on display in the museum of Stavros.
The narrow road down to the beach from Stavros is very winding but not a problem if driven slowly. There is a car park at the bottom that just about copes with visitor numbers and there is a decent beach hut for snacks and drinks as well as enough toilets and a changing room. Kayaks and paddle boards are also available. Polis beach is a great location to spend a day at the beach. Overall, a must when visiting the island of Ithaca.
