Petani beach
Petani is yet another gorgeous beach on Kefalonia. A magnificent beach in a dramatic setting that equally competes Myrtos in beauty and ambience. It is positioned on the west side of the island so sunsets are amazing. Its name comes from the Homeric word “epietanoi” that means an area with plenty of water. In fact, the area has abundance of freshwater, and said that springs gush even in the sea, keeping the water cool. The beach is vulnerable to winds and swimming can get dangerous when strong winds blow in the area. In such windy days, extra care should be taken if you are along with young children and people with mobile problems.
Petani is a fairly long beach with white sand dotted with fine small pebbles. The water is in all shades of blue and swimming is exceptional. There is very little shade but sun loungers and umbrellas are available. The beach is also served with a snack bar and changing room facilities. There are plenty of rocks to enjoy sea dips or to snorkel in amongst and a good variety of fish to see. Although off the beaten track, it is well worth a visit.
Petani is located near Lixouri, on the Paliki peninsula. It is a wonderful drive down to the beach on a bendy and steep tarmac road with breathtaking views from above. Try to get there before noon because the small number of parking places full up quickly. Close to the beach are a couple of tavernas and cafes that provide full meals, drinks and snacks.
