The Athens & Epidaurus Festival is one of Europe’s oldest and most celebrated cultural festivals, with a history spanning more than 70 years. Held every summer, it transforms Athens and Epidaurus into major international stages for theatre, music, dance, and contemporary performance, attracting thousands of visitors from around the world.
Since its launch, the festival has hosted some of the biggest names in the global arts scene, featuring world-renowned performers, orchestras, directors, and actors from both Greece and abroad. Until 2005, performances were held exclusively at legendary venues such as the Odeon of Herodes Atticus beneath the Acropolis, the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, and the Lycabettus Theatre.
From 2006 onward, the festival expanded significantly, adding new contemporary performance spaces including the industrial cultural venue Pireos 260 in Athens, along with additional locations across Attica and other regions of Greece.
The festival’s mission is to promote culture, artistic expression, and international collaboration while contributing to Greece’s cultural identity and tourism. Today, it is considered one of the top summer events in Greece and a must-experience attraction for travellers visiting Athens during the festival season.
