Gria Vathra

One of the highlights of Samothrace is the opportunity to swim in natural pools, locally known as vathres. These pools are formed by mountain water running down the slopes, creating waterfalls and ponds. Gria Vathra is the best-known pool area on the island and is easily accessible from the village of Therma. Wear comfortable shoes, take water and a towel in a backpack and enjoy a refreshing dip into the cool waters. Keep in mind that some people like to swim naked.

There is a path that leads to Gria Vathra, perfect for families. The trail will lead you to an artificial vathra which is very popular. A few meters from it, behind the big rock, is situated the first natural pool. Gria vathra offers a peaceful place to rest and cool off. As you keep walking and climbing you will find more of these natural pools but we would recommend not attempting to climb unless you are experienced in canyoning and have the proper equipment. Climbing higher can be very dangerous, so please DO NOT risk your life. To reach the first vathra is an easy 10 min walk. Just follow the water pipes from the parking lot and keep walking until you reach the first waterfall. Gria Vathra is just 550 meters (2 mins) from Therma village and has been a popular spot for locals and visitors for a long time.
