Monastery of Saint Nikodemus
The Holy Monastery of Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite is built at an altitude of 700 meters on one of the most beautiful slopes of Mount Paikos, near the village of Pentalofos, in the prefecture of Kilkis, Macedonia, Greece. The monastery is a member of the Holy Monastery of Simonos Petra of Mount Athos and was founded on August 31, 1981 by the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Polyani and Kilkis (1974 – 1991), Ambrosios. The Monastery celebrates seven times a year, the most important being on July 14, the commemoration of Saint Nicodemus. On Good Friday, Vespers take place in front of the wooden Cross on a hillside outside the Monastery’s walls, in the presence of many believers. It is a unique experience that attracts many believers. All church services and ceremonies are performed according to the standard of the Mount Athos protocols.
The central church is divided into two levels. The upper level is dedicated to Agios Nikodemus the Hagiorite and the ground floor to Saints Raphael, Irene and Nikolaos. On June 9, 1990, the relics of Agios Nicodemus was transferred from Mount Athos and ever since, it has been exhibiting in the Monastery for the blessing of the faithful. The Saint's relic was stolen in 2010, but miraculously the sacrilegious repented and returned the relic to the monastery to the joy of the Brotherhood and the faithful. The Monastery is one of the most impressive monasteries in Macedonia and has a rich spiritual work. It is also renowned for its high-quality hand-made icons.
In the Holy Monastery of Saint Nicodemus, a Divine Liturgy is held every day as well as the Invocation to the Virgin Mary of "Paramythia", before the Vespers. On the afternoon of the 14th of every month, the holy mystery of unction is practised. The Monastery is 70 kilometers from Thessaloniki and 7 kilometers from the town of Goumenissa and is open daily from sunrise to sunset.
