Agios Georgios Monastery Skyros

Perched at the highest point of Chora, within the medieval castle of Skyros, the Monastery of Agios Georgios (Saint George) is one of the island’s most important religious landmarks and a must-visit attraction for history and culture lovers.

 

History & Legend

According to local tradition, Saint George (Agios Giorgis) arrived on Skyros by sea—an image symbolised by the silver-plated icon depicting the saint on horseback. The monastery was originally founded in 960 AD by the Byzantine emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, following his victory over the Arabs.

By the 15th century (1447), the monastery came under the authority of the Great Lavra Monastery on Mount Athos, along with extensive land holdings on the island—reportedly covering nearly one-fifth of Skyros. The present church dates back to around 1600, as indicated by an inscription above the bell tower, while parts of the complex have been restored after earthquake damage in 1984.

 

Architecture & Highlights

The monastery shares a historic entrance—known as the “Sideroporta” (Iron Gate)—with the castle, creating a unique fortified complex. Inside, visitors will find:

  • A peaceful courtyard with terraces and balconies overlooking the Aegean
  • A beautifully carved wooden iconostasis, reflecting Skyros’ rich woodcarving tradition
  • Rare religious icons, including a striking depiction of Saint George with a dark complexion, believed to have been brought from Constantinople during the period of Iconoclasm

 

Among the monastery’s notable relics is a medal belonging to Spyridon Louis, the first modern Olympic marathon winner, who dedicated it to the saint in gratitude.
