Old Town of Xanthi

The Old Town of Xanthi is located in the north of the modern city. Built in 1829, it remains unaffected by time and preserves its nobility, grace, cultural importance and historical value. Due to this fact it has been characterized as a traditional settlement since 1978. The Old Town experienced great prosperity and economic growth in the 19th century thanks to its strategic location on commercial toads between east and west, and the cultivation, processing and trading of a special variety of tobacco known as “basma”. This variety had a special aroma and taste, which made it very popular, and was trade to every corner of Europe. During that period the town had tobacco stores, four consulates, insurance companies, Turkish baths, hotels, two theaters and f course many tobacco factories. After the Bulgarian occupation from 1914 to 1919 the city declined economically, so the production and trade of tobacco.

However, signs of that golden era are still visible in every corner of the old district. The Old Town is a concoction of picturesque cobbled streets, 19th century mansions, houses featuring Greek and Ottoman elements, byzantine churches and neoclassical houses belonging to former rich tobacco producers and merchants. Although most of the houses were bult by experienced Greek craftsmen from Epirus and Macedonia, some of the houses and mansions feature European architectural elements. The best way to get a glimpse of the everyday life in Xanthi during that period is a visit to the Folk and History Museum of Xanthi on Antika Street.

Other places of interest in the Old Town are the Old Clock at the central square, the Basilica of Agios Vlasios built in 1838, the Town Hall, the house of the great Greek composer Manos Hatzidakis, the Municipal Art Gallery and the Museum of Shadows. There is so much to see and do in the Old Town of Xanthi, and the best way to explore it is on foot. Wander through the cobbled streets, admire the beautiful houses and mansions, visit the museums, and taste local delicacies and some of the best sweets in Greece.

Today, the Old Town of Xanthis is a vibrant area during the whole day, filled with traditional cafes, bars and tavernas.
