Skaros Castle

Skaros Castle

Skaros is a a rocky promontory jutting into the sea, located in front of Imerovigli village, and one of the symbols of Santorini. It is hard to imagine that on this steep rock there was one of the 5 kasteli (fortified settlements) of Santorini and the medieval capital of the island. It is the oldest kasteli in Santorini. Unfortunately, it is also completely ruined. It was built between 1205 and 1230, when the Venetians were already the rulers of the island.

The castle suffered many damages from the eruptions of the volcano. It was the capital until the 18th century but it seems that the eartquakes of 1701-1711 caused its abandonment. During a 19th-century earthquake the castle was destroyed and today only some ruins are visible. There is a trail beginning from the church of Agios Georgios through the isthmus connecting Skaros with Imerovigli and wraps around Skaros reaching after half mile the small chapel of Theoskepasti with a unique panoramic view of the caldera. It is according to all visitors the top view spot in Santorini.
