Avlemon Castle
Avlemonas is a picturesque village in Kythira. At the entrance of the fishing port, there is a relatively small castle.
The castle was built by the Venetians in 1565. Its obvious purpose was to guard the port, as this was the major port of the island in those days.
The shape of the castle is octagonal. Inside, there is a keep tower, and the buildings of the guards and some storage facilities.
The castle was neglected for years but it is not in a very bad condition. Recently, the municipality makes efforts to do some maintenance works in it.
