Gramvousa beach

Gramvousa beach

This is a lovely beach with nice and clear water, fantastic for bathing, swimming and snorkeling. The beach itself is small with a mix of sand and shingle and a bit of a shade at the back. There is also a small chapel, dedicated to St. George. On the east corner sits the shipwreck of a 35m long motor ship which is main attraction of the beach.

The beach is located on the Island of Imeri Gramvousa which is a 15-minute cruise across the channel from Balos Beach, Crete. There are daily cruises which operate from nearby Kissamos port and give you a few hours on Gramvousa before heading on to Balos. The boats moor at the corner of the Bay, a 5-minute walk away from the beach. The beach sits below the Venetian fort of Gramvousa Castle, which looms nearly 500 feet above on the clifftop. If you do not want to climb to the fortress you can enjoy the great scenery and a swim in the warm shallow waters of the beach. However, there are rocks in the water and the risk of slipping. There are no facilities so you have to carry your own stuff with you.
