A Breathtaking Seaside Destination in Crete with a Venetian Fortress View

Fragokastelo Beach is a stunning sandy beach in southern Chania, featuring shallow, crystal-clear waters, making it perfect for families and relaxed swimming. Nestled beneath the imposing ruins of the Venetian castle of Fragokastelo, this beach offers a dramatic and picturesque backdrop. It’s an ideal spot to cool off after hiking the breathtaking Imbros Gorge or exploring the historic fortress.

This organized beach features a beach bar, restrooms, showers, and plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas for those who prefer a more comfortable seaside experience. Nearby, you’ll find traditional Greek tavernas within walking distance, serving fresh local cuisine. Whether you want to sunbathe, take a refreshing swim, or watch a spectacular sunset, Fragokastelo Beach is a fantastic choice.

Being one of the most popular beaches in the region, it can get crowded during peak season. If you're looking for a quieter alternative, the long and serene Vatalos Beach lies to the west, while to the east, the impressive Orthi Ammos Beach is known for its rolling sand dunes.

Located 13 km east of Chora Sfakion and 80 km southeast of Chania, Fragokastelo Beach is slightly off the beaten path but well worth the journey. The drive from Chania to Fragokastelo takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes along a scenic mountain road. However, be sure to check the weather forecast before visiting, as strong winds can make it difficult to fully enjoy the beach.
