Kallio

Kallio is a village located in southern mainland near the lakeshore of the artificial lake of Mornos. It used to be a flourishing place since 400 B.C. when it was forming the ancient city of  Kallipolis. In 1970 A.D. the village had a population of more than 100 people., working mainly on farming activities. In the late 70s the future of the village was relying on the decisions of a Spatial Palnning Committee on their effort to tackle the effects of severe droughts that threatening the water supply of the capital of Greece, Athens.

The idea was to build a big dam in the flow of a major river in southern mainland, the Mornos river. However, this solution included the submerging  of a huge valley including Kallio. The wider area near Mornos was flooded forming an artificial lake. The people of Kallio were subsidized by the Greek government and the project of damming the Mornos river started in 1972. Kallio was submerged on the New Year's Eve of 1980 directly after the end of the dam construction.

At periods of low lake-levels, Kallio was emerging as a ghost village from the lake's depth.
