Chalki

Situated close to Rhodes, Chalki or Halki is a gorgeous tiny island with crystal clear waters, a single beautiful village, lush nature, and enough history to make your visit unique. It may be one of the smallest inhabited islands in Greece, but this tranquil place is bursting with personality and full of Greek charm and hospitality. Sailing into the port of Halki and seeing the colors of the buildings reflecting off the clear blue Aegean Sea, you will instantly fall in love. Restored neoclassical mansions line the horseshoe-shaped harbor, and the silent clock tower of the town’s main church, St. Nicholas rises above the rooftops, while three sail-less windmills peer down from the mountainous backdrop. The island has some organized beaches that can be accessed on foot or bus. The rest are totally secluded.

Despite it being a fairly small island, there are quite a few things to do in Halki. From visiting ancient structures to wandering through the streets of Nimporio, or making your way to the beaches for sunbathing, swimming and good food. Halki is small enough for most people to get around on foot, and most people do just that. Hiking here is an enjoyable activity, as many old footpaths cross the island and lead to quaint chapels, secluded beaches and hilltops with breathtaking views to the sea. Recognized by UNESCO as the Island of Peace and Friendship, Halki is a jewel of an island in the Dodecanese. It can be visited for short holidays or as a day trip from Rhodes and is the ideal place to get away from the noise and trappings of modernity, as well as to relax and find peace and privacy.

Halki is a Greek island in the Dodecanese archipelago in the Aegean Sea, some 6 nautical miles west of Rhodes.

It is believed that the island was named after the copper mines and workshops once located here (halkos being Greek for copper).
