05/07/2025Dancing Representation
Hero Unplugged

This July, the ancient Roman Odeon of Kos sets the stage for Hero Unplugged, a contemporary solo dance performance by acclaimed choreographer Varvara Bardaká. As part of the Ministry of Culture's national cultural program "All of Greece, One Culture", the production will take place on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July 2025, at 20:00, with free admission.

Set against the atmospheric backdrop of Kos’s restored 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, Hero Unplugged tells the story of a young individual navigating a heroic path through the lens of physical expression. With themes of disconnecting, introspection, and modern-day heroism, the performance invites audiences to reconsider what it means to be "plugged in"—both digitally and emotionally.

Bardaká draws inspiration from Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, echoing the metaphor of shadows and illusions in a world shaped by expectation and image. Through movement, the performance parallels this classical philosophy with today’s realities, exploring how societal demands influence identity, ambition, and solitude.

The Roman Odeon—an intimate ancient venue known for its acoustics and historical resonance—provides a compelling setting. As the dancer traverses the full length of the stage, the space itself becomes an extension of the choreography.

The creative team includes original music by Vasilis Georgakópoulos, performance and co-creation by Orestis Bárkas, and staging, costume, and movement design by Ioulía Zacharáki. The production is presented by the Varvara Bardaká Dance Ensemble.

Hero Unplugged runs for approximately 50 minutes. While entrance is free, advance registration is recommended via the Ministry of Culture’s website: Hero Unplugged Event Info & Bookings

Travel Tip

Make the most of your visit by arriving early to explore nearby landmarks like the Casa Romana, the Ancient Agora, or the legendary Tree of Hippocrates—all within walking distance from the Odeon. As the sun sets over Kos, Hero Unplugged promises an evocative blend of ancient architecture and modern storytelling.
