Diktamos Gorge

The gorge of Diktamos starts next to the village of Katochori at an altitude of 300 meters, and exits 8 km east, next to the old single-arched, stone bridge of Stylos, one kilometer before the entrance of the village. This is why it is also known as the gorge of Katechori or Stylos. Diktamos is crossed by the main tributary of the Kylliaris river that originates on the northern slopes of Mavri peak of the White Mountains. Its main characteristic that makes it different than the rest of the canyons in Chania is its orientation. Diktomos does not have a north to south direction but an east to west. Another gorge with similar direction is the gorge of Ha in the prefecture of Lassithi.

It is very beautiful and verdant mainly with plane trees and with many steep sides where the endemic herb of Crete, dittany, grows. Crossing it is relatively easy, but it needs attention, especially for those who do not have the required experience as there are some difficult passages. It is very well marked with red spray on the stones that shows exactly the direction you need to follow, so there is no risk of getting lost. In Stylos you can drink cooled water of the springs and have a drink or dine under the huge plane trees in the central square.
