Nileas Gorge

A Hidden Hiking Paradise of Rugged Beauty and Adventure

Nileas Gorge, also known as Arapis or Bilovinena Gorge, is a breathtaking natural marvel tucked away in the dense forests of Northern Evia. Situated on the eastern foothills of Mount Xiros, it lies between the villages of Strofai, Amelantes, Agia Anna, Palaiovrysi, and Kerameia. This impressive gorge takes its name from the Nileas River, a tributary that carves its way through the landscape.

The river is fed by springs above the village of Kerasia and flows through the gorge before emptying into the Aegean Sea at Krya Vrysi beach near Ancient Kirinthos. Over time, the flowing waters have sculpted a dramatic canyon, with cliff walls reaching heights of up to 80 meters in some places.

Remarkably, the heart of Nileas Gorge remained untouched by the devastating 2021 wildfires that ravaged large parts of Northern Evia. While the entrance area shows signs of fire damage, nature is already regenerating with young pines, trees, and shrubs. Within the gorge lies a cave that played a vital role during the Ottoman occupation. In the summer of 1823, local residents seeking refuge from the Ottoman forces hid inside the cave. Tragically, when the Ottomans discovered them, they set fire to the cave entrance, suffocating everyone inside.

Historical Significance

Nileas Gorge and its river are referenced in ancient texts by Homer. According to mythology, Nileas and his twin brother Pelias were sons of the god Poseidon and Tyro. Poseidon is said to have taken the form of the river god Enipeas—the most beautiful among the river deities and Tyro’s beloved—to unite with her, linking Nileas indirectly to Enipeas.
