Hike to an Abandoned Stone Beacon in the Cyclades

Standing on the tiny islet of Planitis, just off the northwestern coast of Tinos, Panormos Lighthouse is one of the island's most atmospheric and little-known landmarks. Built in 1886, the historic stone lighthouse occupies the highest point of the islet, offering spectacular panoramic views across the Aegean Sea and the rugged coastline of northern Tinos. The lighthouse tower stands 6.1 metres high, while its light once shone from a focal height of 80 metres above sea level. During its years of operation, seven lighthouse keepers served at this remote outpost.

The lighthouse was automated in 1968, and shortly afterwards it was decommissioned. Part of the structure collapsed during the winter of 1984, and today the abandoned buildings bear the unmistakable marks of time and the harsh Aegean weather. Despite its ruined state, the site retains a haunting beauty that makes it a rewarding destination for photographers, hikers, history enthusiasts, and anyone looking to discover one of Tinos' hidden gems.

Planitis Islet can be reached either by boat, weather permitting, or on foot via a rough coastal trail. While the walk requires sturdy footwear, the breathtaking scenery more than rewards the effort. A visit to Panormos Lighthouse is easily combined with a day exploring the charming seaside village of Panormos, where you can relax on the beach or enjoy fresh seafood at one of the waterfront tavernas.
