Kavala - Old Kavala (The Waterway Trail)
This trail connects modern Kavala with the traditional village of Palea (Old) Kavala. It is one of the most interesting and beautiful hiking trails in the prefecture, mainly due to the large number of historical and cultural elements along the way. With a total length of 10,6 km, the route is divided into two sections. The first half is about 5 km long and starts at the little church of Agios Konstantinos, at the end of the 13th of September Street, in Kavala. It leads to the springs that supplied water the fortress and the surrounding city in the last century. The place is known as "Mother of Water" and is located at the so-called "Tria Karagatsia" area. The path runs on top of the ancient water pipe, through which the water flowed in order to reach the aqueduct, now known as the ‘Kamares’. Along the way, there are some old water bridges, ruins of ancient fountains and tanks for the purification of the water. A fountain with drinking water can be found next to the first stone bridge.
The second half of the trail, is a bit more challenging. It runs among fields and old farmhouses, and intersects with paths used by herd animals. This part of the trail, is not very clear and well-marked, so you have to be careful not to get lost. In the village of Palea Kavala, you can see some abandoned watermills and a trough of water where villagers used to wash carpets and other clothes in the past. But the most impressive sight of all, is a magnificent waterfall with two natural pools where you can swim in its icy and refreshing water, if you are brave enough. The path has a low degree of difficulty and is ideal for the whole family. It is particularly enchanting route, especially during spring and summer, when nature turns green and water abounds in the area.
