Chapel of Theoskepasti

The Chapel of Theoskepasti has been formed inside a tiny cave, the top of which is covered by two large sloping slabs that extend far from the roof. The chapel has the most unique architecture as it looks more akin to a mushroom house than a place of worship. According to local tradition, it was founded after the locals found the relics of Saint Osia Theoktisti in a crypt behind the church of the Theoktistis Monastery and moved her relics to a nearby cave for internment and built a chapel around it.

The cave is 5 meters long and has a width of 2,5 meters while its entrance door is only 1,40 meters in height. Inside the chapel there is an old carved iconostasis, dating back to 1894. The caverνous chapel is very impressive, attracting lots of visitors and is one of the most photographed spots on the island of Ikaria.
