Paxos island, also known as Paxi or Paxoi, is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. Situated south of Corfu, Paxos island is the seventh largest of the Ionian islands.
There are several theories regarding the origin of the name. According to Strabo, the name derives from the Phoenician word “Pax”, which describes the island’s trapezoid shape. Another theory states that the name derives from the word passion (pathos in Greek). The Greek God Poseidon, who had fallen in love with the nymph Amphitrite, could only make her love him if he gave her a piece of land. Hence, he cast his trident, cutting off a piece of Corfu, which moved a bit to the south, and gave it to the nymph.
