Domata beach
Domata is a stunning and unspoilt beach of rare natural beauty in Crete. It is located about 70km south of Chania town between Sougia and Agia Roumeli. This vast beach is formed at the exit of the wild gorge of Klados. It is a unique dense landscape with sharp cliffs of conglomerate rocks that resemble rooftops. The beach has fine crystal clear pebbles and blue waters. If you dig the sand, you might even find fresh water. Domata has actually two large beaches split by a cluster of rocks. The first beach is crossed by the E4 path, while the second and smaller one which considered to be more beautiful, is only accessed by boat or by swimming.
The beach is not organized so if you decide to visit it, you have to take all the essentials with you. There is no need of taking an umbrella because there are pine trees that are located near the beach and offer natural shade. Domata is an isolated beach and undoubtedly one of the best unknown to many, beaches of Greece. The beach is reached by such few people that you will probably have it all for yourself, especially off the peak of the tourist season. This fact makes it an ideal place for naturists and campers.
The easiest way is to get to the beach is to reach Agia Roumeli and then hire a fishing boat to get you there. A second option is by crossing the Klados gorge which is advised not to do it without a guide as it is among the most rugged and dangerous gorges in Crete. And the third option is by walking the E4 coastal path that passes from the beach starting from Agia Roumeli or Sougia. This path is strictly for experienced hikers, because it is very tiring as the uphill route of the mountain reaches up to 700 meters and extremely dangerous, as it requires you to walk by the edge of a cliff for several hours.
