Church of Arsali
The small cavernous church of Arsali (Holy Jerusalem) is located on a steep cliff, surrounded by firs and rocks, above the village of Ypati. The icon of the Saint was carried there by the faithfuls in order to be rescued from the heterodox. The people of Ypati, in her honor, formed an internal part into a church that celebrates every year on September 4 as well as on Easter Thursday.
During Easter in Ypati revive ancient customs, associated with spring and Easter. At noon on Easter Wednesday men climb to the cave of St. Jerusalem, traveling a distance of about two (2) hours, to pay honor to the Saint. The pilgrims stay overnight in the cave, lighting fires and feasting until dawn. The same night women and children light fires at the main crossroad, sing traditional songs and dance .
On Thursday morning, a divine service is held in the church. When the service in the cave ends, men go down to a place so-called "Perivolia" where relatives and friends are waiting for them. "Perivolia" is a beautiful, verdant area near the village where there is a spring running abundantly fresh water. On this plateau, a large feast with dances and food is organized. In the afternoon all the people go down to the village square where the procession of the icon takes place. This custom is one of the most important for the locals.
This historic cave was the base and the meeting point of the local leaders of the Greek revolution of 1821 against the Turks. It is worth mentioning that on the rocks of the cave, there are some hagiographies.
