Monastery of Agia Markella
Located at a beautiful bay near the village of Volissos, the Monastery of Agia Markella (Saint Marcella) is the most important pilgrimage center on island of Chios. Agia Markella who was killed in this area around 1500 AD, is now the patron saint of Chios. Her memory is celebrated every July 22. On that day, a great festival takes place with hundreds of participants from Chios Island, the neighboring islands, also from other parts of Greece. Many of the pilgrims walk from Chios Town to the monastery on the eve day. They camp in the courtyard and wait patiently to pray the Saint’s icon. For pilgrims who want to stay overnight, there are cells that serve as rooms. They are part of the monastery complex and staying there is free. The monastery is situated 6,7 kilometers from Volissos and about 47 kilometers from Chios Town. Right in front of the monastery, there is a lovely beach with cold and deep waters.
The story of Agia Markella is very sad. Markella was born in Volissos, Chios. Tradition says that when she was still very young, she lost her mother, and as she grew up, she decided to stay a virgin and dedicate her life to Christ. But as she grew up, her beauty blinded her father who started flirting her. The young girl did not want to obey the desires of the pagan father, so she left home, and found refuge on the mountains. Her father chased her, and found her hidden in a bush. He burned the bush in order to force her get out, but she run away. Her father threw an arrow to her foot to stop her. Wounded and she saw her father approaching, she prayed to God to save her. Unfortunately, she was caught by her father, who cut her head off and threw it into the sea. At the point where Markella was hit by the arrow, hot healing springs appeared. You can get to that point on foot, by following a path that starts from the right side of the beach where the monastery is.
