Shipwreck «Olympia»
The shipwreck of the ship "Olympia" is half submerged in southwestern Amorgos, in the location of Kato Meria near Kalotaritissa beach. The ship was built in 1950 with the first name "ISLAND". In 1975, it was renamed "STRYMON" and in 1979 it was renamed "OLYMPIA".
The Cypriot-flagged ship sank in February 1980 when it tried to find shelter in the bay during heavy sea turbulence. However, the miscalculation of that point, in its attempt to drop anchor, had the effect of crashing on the rocks in the Liverou bay in the Kalotaritissa area, while the entire crew was saved by going ashore.
The shipwreck of the ship "Olympia" is one of the most interesting sights of Amorgos. It remains there exposed to the rage of the waves that slowly destroyed his hull, creating a unique setting. The wave passes through its holdings the pierced ones that explode on the rocks of the coast. The rusty bow still shows the relief from its old name: "Inland". The "Amorgos shipwreck" became famous when some scenes from Luc Besson's Le Grand Bleu were shot there in 1988.
