Stroympos of Amorgos

Stroympos is the characteristic settlement of Aegiali, which had “twelve houses and thirteen ovens”. To reach the village, set off from Loza square in Langada and head down to the gorge. The village was uninhabited until a few years ago when several foreigners bought and renovated some of the houses in keeping with the natural environment and traditional island architecture. The view (Aegiali Bay, Nikouria island, Langada, Tholaria) and the verdant setting compose a uniquely beautiful landscape. In Stroumpos, you will find the chapel of Agia Marina, Drys gorge and the old aqueduct of Langada village. The settlement is also known as “neraidohori“, or fairy village, as it is said that the fairies took over when the villagers left. In olden times, every house has its own wood-oven for baking food and bread. The extra oven was built to use in case of emergency. Hence the 12 houses and 13 ovens. The village also houses Agios Nikitas church, also worth a visit as you pass through Stroumpos.
