The Ancient Naxos Aqueduct
It is one of the most important archaeological monuments of the island and extends about 11 km. It has been operating since the 6th century BC. until the 8th century AD. century and transported the rich waters from the fountains of Fleri and Melanes to the city of Naxos. To make it, the Naxians have been drilling the mountain by building a tunnel. In the valley with springs and waters there was a sanctuary in which some goddess of the euphoria of the earth was worshiped and a protector of the quarries working in neighboring quarries. The archaeological site was excavated and shaped by the University of Athens and you can see the entrance to the tunnel of the aqueduct, the exit and parts of it that were excavated in five positions. Driving from Flerio to Chora you will notice at many points on the road signs for the parts of the aqueduct that were revealed.
