Chapel of Agios Antonios of Anafi

At the brink of the steep NE coasts of the island, gazing at the pelago towards Amorgos and Astypalaia, the country church of Agios Antonios dates back to the Late Middle Ages. The rooftop of the church has two arches and in its north aisle inside it, murals of the Visitation, Ascension and Nativity are preserved which date back to the early 14th century. In the past, the islanders were having a big pilgrimage on the day of the saint’s celebration (January 17), coming up here from Chora with beasts of burden with the reed pipe musician leading. Agios Antonios is the only Byzantine church on the island and it lies under the jurisdiction of the monastery of Chozoviotissa in Amorgos.
