Chapel of Agios Antonios of Anafi

Tucked away on the northeastern cliffs of Anafi Island, the Saint Anthony Chapel is a stunning Byzantine church offering panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, with sights stretching to Amorgos and Astypalaia. Dating back to the Late Middle Ages, it is the only Byzantine chapel on the island and was historically linked to the Monastery of Hozoviotissa in Amorgos. Above it, the dramatic Katraki rock rises, dotted with mysterious ancient structures.

The chapel features a dual-arched roof and walls that incorporate ancient architectural fragments. Inside the northern aisle, visitors can admire 14th-century frescoes depicting the Nativity, Ascension, and Presentation of Christ. Traditionally, locals made a pilgrimage here on January 17th, Saint Anthony’s feast day, traveling from Anafi town with pack animals led by a tsampouna player.

Visiting the Chapel

The chapel is accessible via a scenic hiking trail from Panagia Axinou, starting from the island’s road network. This route is considered one of Anafi’s most beautiful walks, offering stunning cliffside views, unforgettable landscapes, and perfect photo opportunities for travelers and nature enthusiasts alike.
