Panagia Flevariotissa Astypalaia

The Monastery of Panagia Flevariotissa is a peaceful monastic complex located about 7 km north of Chora, Astypalea, on the Greek island of Astypalea. Set in a quiet and remote landscape, it offers visitors a unique glimpse into the island’s religious heritage and Cycladic architecture away from the main tourist routes.

Architecture & Setting

The monastery consists of the main church (katholikon) surrounded by lower auxiliary buildings that form a small enclosed courtyard. Built in a distinctive Cycladic style, the church is a cross-in-square vaulted structure topped with a dome supported by Gothic-style arches, an unusual architectural blend rarely seen in the Aegean.

Chapel in a Cave & Local Legend

One of the most remarkable features of the complex is found on the northern wall, where a natural cave has been transformed into a small chapel. According to local tradition, this is the sacred spot where a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary (Panagia) was discovered, giving the monastery its spiritual significance and name.
