Rhodian Deer Statues
Sculptures of Rhodian deer, a stag and a doe, stand on slim columns on either side of the Mandraki Harbor entrance. The deer is the elegant symbol of the cosmopolitan island. According to legends the deer were brought to the island by the Crusaders in the Medieval times, although osteological findings in a Neolithic settlement testify that they have been in Rhodes from ancient times. There are two deer statues, a stag and a doe. At the same spot, it is believed that in antiquity stood one of the seven wonders of the world, the famous Colossus of Rhodes. The Rhodian deer statues are among the most photographed sights on the island.
