Kritinia Castle (Kastellos)
Kritinia Castle, also known as Kastellos was erected in 1472 by the Venetian sculptor and architect Giorgio Orsini to provide refuge in case of enemy raids for the inhabitants of nearby villages. The castle sits proud atop a steep rock 131m high, and offers a 360-degree monitoring view which proved invaluable when pirates and other enemies tried to raid the island. The construction of the castle took place under the rule of four different Grand Masters. Originally, it was divided in three levels, each of them belonging to a different Grand Master.
After Orsini, the construction of the castle was handed over to Grand Master Pierre D’ Subusson who added the tower and gunnery. Fortifications specialist Basilio Della Scola who visited the island of Rhodes between 1520 and 1522 was also engaged to strengthen the fort. The construction of the castle was finally completed in the 16th century under the Grand Master Fabrizio del Carretto (1513-1521). The castle has a perimeter of 180 meters and its main gate is on the south side.
The structure has both Byzantine and Medieval architectural elements. It is a rectangular building the southwest section of which faces the Aegean Sea, Halki island and some other deserted islands. The outer protective walls of the castle are well preserved and the coat of arms of Grand Master D'Amboise (1503-1512) and Grand Master Caretto (1513-1521), are still visible above the entrance. Inside, there are also the ruins of St. Paul's Catholic Church as well as some newer buildings. Later, during the Italian occupation, the castle served as a naval base.
The castle is open to the public and free to enter. There is a road leading to the monument and a small car park directly below the castle. The nice little cafe just off the car park is also worth a visit for a refreshing drink. This castle is not suitable for people with walking impairments, however, the views from it are stunning. It is located near Kritinia village on the west coast of Rhodes Island. It is 55 km (34 miles) southwest of the city of Rhodes and if you are driving, it will take about an hour. You can also take public transportation as both the village of Kritinia and the castle are on a bus route. A short distance from Kritinia village is Skala Kamirou, a nice place to relax at the beach or visit the remains of Ancient Kamiros.
