Agios Nektarios Monastery
The Monastery of Agios Nectarios in Aegina is one of the largest monasteries in Greece and one of the most significant Orthodox churches in the Balkans. The Monastery of Agios Nectarios attracts tourists from all over the world, who visit the area to pray and seek healing. With its miraculous history and spiritual significance, the monastery has become a major pilgrimage site.
The Holy Monastery of Agios Nectarios was founded in 1904, and it took its current form between 1973-1994, when the locals built upon the ruins of a Byzantine monastery. The monastery's history is closely tied to Agios Nectarios himself, who settled on the island in 1908.
He quickly became beloved by the people, thanks to two miracles, as local tradition recounts. He is said to have healed a young man possessed by a demon and, after praying to God at the request of the island's inhabitants, brought rain to Aegina after a three-year drought, helping the locals recover economically. These events were seen as divine signs, and the islanders revered him as a saint even while he was still alive.
Agios Nectarios, now the patron saint of Aegina, passed away in 1920 at the Aretaeio Hospital from cancer, leaving behind a rich pastoral, theological, and literary legacy. His relics, despite being buried and exhumed three times, remained incorrupt for more than 30 years. As a result, he was officially canonized as a saint in 1961 by the Greek Orthodox Church. Since then, the monastery has become a source of hope and faith for both devout believers and visitors from all walks of life.
The Monastery of Agios Nectarios is located in an uninhabited area, halfway between the port of Aegina and the fishing village of Agia Marina, just 1 kilometer from Paliachora. When you reach the site, you’ll immediately feel awe, especially from the sheer size of the building.
