Folklore Museum “Maria Koutsohero”
Housed in an old village house, this museum is a real highlight in Lefkada. It has great history and family members are still involved to explain everything and show you around. A fascinating half an hour tour will take you into island's life from the recent past and you can see how people used to work and live back at those days. Most practices are no longer used and have been replaced by modern means of production. The museum has an amazing collection oof old artefacts and embroidery as well as lots of old working tools on display.
The Folklore Museum “Maria Koutsohero” is a privately owned museum, run by an old local man whose previous generation lived in the building. The story of Maria will blow you away with the incredible embroidery she performed one handed, and by oil lamp. Although one handed, she was a very skilled embroider and started a school for learning local girls to embroider one handed. The founder and guide of the museum is one of Maria’s sons. At the end of the tour, there are samples of embroidery to be purchased. This museum is important for showing the history of embroidery in Karya, a small village 14 km west of Lefkada Town. There is a small entrance fee but visiting this museum is a brilliant experience. To get there, you will have to walk up a steep cobbled street and even steeper steps to enter but worth every step. Highly recommended.
