Paleokastro (Old Castle) of Ios
Perched atop a 300-meter hill on the eastern side of Ios, between Agia Theodoti and Psathi, Palaiokastro offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island’s rugged coastline and the nearby islands of Paros, Naxos, Amorgos, and the Small Cyclades.
A Fortress with Byzantine & Venetian Heritage
Historical records suggest that the Byzantines originally built this fortress to monitor key maritime routes leading to Crete. However, another theory attributes its construction to Marco Crisco in 1397. Within the ruins, visitors can explore sections of the ancient walls, remnants of historic structures, and the charming Church of Panagia Palaiokastritissa, which celebrates its feast day on September 8th.
How to Get There
Palaiokastro is located along the road to Psathi, just before reaching the village. While a signpost marks the site, the fortress is easily visible from afar due to its elevated position. To reach the top, follow a stone-paved, winding trail with multiple steps. Though the hike is challenging and requires good physical fitness, the breathtaking 360° views from the summit make the effort truly worthwhile.
